Texas, 1930. Edna Spalding (Sally Field) is struggling to raise her two children after her husband is killed by a drunk. Her fortunes worsen when she learns that the bank will foreclose on her property, which includes a 40 acre cotton field. Determined to keep hold of her land, she decides to plant and harvest the cotton herself, and hires help from laborer Moze (Danny Glover).
