Jeff Bridges and Barry Brown play wet-behind-the-ears outlaws on the run from union conscription during the American Civil War. This offbeat debut from Robert Benton (he went on to make Kramer vs Kramer and Places in the Heart), benefits from sharp plotting and a black sense of the absurd. As renegade Big Joe (David Huddleston) observes: "I'd like to get my hands on the son of a bitch that told me to go west".
