Stanley Nelson's documentary recalls a memorable chapter in the struggle by America's ethnic minorities to obtain the freedoms that are nowadays taken for granted. In 1964, Mississippi was one of the most segregated states in the land. Although black people had won the right to vote in 1870, this was still being systematically denied in several southern states. Officials continually found ways to prevent African Americans from exercising their democratic rights, from lengthy bureaucratic form-filling procedures to overt intimidation, which included beatings and even lynchings. It was against this backdrop that the Freedom Summer movement was founded by dedicated individuals determined to overturn the existing order.
