Journalist Michael Finkel (Jonah Hill) is forced to leave the New York Times in disgrace when he doctors the facts behind a big story. Struggling to find work, he is contacted by Christian Longo (James Franco), a man accused of murdering his wife and three children after being arrested in Mexico under the name 'Michael Finkel'. Presented with the perfect professional gift horse, Finkel agrees to write Longo's story. And as the title says, the murders, the meetings, and the book all happened. Only not quite as Finkel expected...
