The rise of the British suffragette movement - and the brutal obstacles placed in front of it by the male establishment - are soundly illustrated in director Sarah Gavron's humbling account of the battle for the female vote. Carey Mulligan is deeply affecting as the apolitical laundry worker who becomes a feminist footsoldier when the sexist scales fall from her eyes. Meryl Streep has a cameo as suffragette leader Emmeline Pankhurst and Ben Whishaw and Brendan Gleeson bring the male perspective, but the film belongs to the courageous women themselves.
