Steaming Through Austria - Schneebergbahn A Rack Railway to the top of the Schneeberg (2008) In the lower ranges of the Alps there is a rack railway operating 2000 metres above sea level. The steam engines operating this line were built between 1897 to 1902 and are still in daily use. Through steep and difficult terrain, the railway climbs 1,200 metres.
