Peter O'Toole plays a merchant seaman in this adaption of Joseph Conrad's novel. A moment of cowardice, when O'Toole abandons his ship in a storm, leads him to spend his later years trying to redeem himself. His redemption comes when he heads for South Asia where he becomes the hero of a tribe of oppressed Indians.
