In arguably his finest acting hour, Elvis Presley plays a young street hustler who becomes a successful New Orleans club singer, only to be dragged into the city's violent underworld criminal. Directed by Michael 'Casablanca' Curtiz and based on Harold Robbins' novel A Stone For Danny Fisher, the punchy melodrama takes Elvis away from the sun and bubblegum of his usual movie world and allows him to show his true dramatic colours. Of course, classic songs like Hard Headed Woman, As Long As I Have You and the title track ensured that the soundtrack album struck Billboard chart gold.
