After his wife Polly leaves him Joe joins the Home Guard with mates Eddie and wise-cracking Harry during WW2. When Harry is expelled he leads the men on strike then becomes a hero when he deals with an unexploded bomb. He meets Selina, then Polly arrives with a baby and wants to come back, splitting the family.
