Private LA detective Larry 'Doc' Sportello (Joaquin Phoenix) finds himself out of his depth when old flame Shasta (Katherine Waterston) voices suspicions that her lover's wife aims to have him sectioned so she can make off with his moolah. When Shasta and her beau both go AWOL the trail appears to lead to the Golden Fang, a schooner docked at San Pedro. But it could also be a drugs syndicate... or a motley crew of property developers. Thomas Pynchon's source novel gets a suitably surreal treatment from idiosyncratic director Paul Thomas Anderson.
