This epic saga - "bigger than Texas itself " - tells the story of cattle, oil barons and love from the 1920s through to World War II. Rock Hudson and James Dean (in his last film before his death) are the rival suitors of an incandescent Elizabeth Taylor. Look out for the stunning scene where director George Stevens evokes death and rebirth without resorting to any cinematic trickery. Stevens was the only Oscar-winner from ten nominations, though they included a second posthumous nod for Dean.
