Luckily one of them is run by Julien, a handsome 30-something man with an eye for the ladies – including older ones. And so while her husband thinks she’s busying herself with pottery, wine-tasting and painting, Caroline is also occupying herself with a younger admirer. Director Vernoux steadily avoids cliché in her adaptation of co-screenwriter Fanny Chesnel’s novel to offer a realistic look at a shifting, dynamic relationship between two strong-minded people. With French icon Fanny Ardant giving a standout lead performance, Bright Days Ahead is a funny, credible and thought-provoking portrait of a distinguished woman undergoing a mild late-life crisis and enjoying every minute of it.
