When the sheriff is killed Gene Autry is appointed the new one by Judge Beaumont, his friend Jack's father. When Jack learns his father is disinheriting him they quarrel. Rocky Morgan kills the judge and Gene has to jail his friend. Jack thinks he's been double crossed but Gene's trying to clear Jack.
