Just paroled from jail, Dennis (Paul Giamatti) comes home to find his wife has shacked up with his old associate Rene (Paul Rudd). Burying the hatchet, the pair go into business selling Christmas trees in Brooklyn. But going straight is harder than it looks. Bigger on humbug than festive cheer, this refreshingly unsentimental Yuletide yarn succeeds thanks to the sharp banter and credible chemistry between the characters, particularly Giamatti's Dennis and Sally Hawkins as the straight-talking Russian lady who isn't buying his reformed-man act.
